Jem Finch
Jeremy, known as Jem throughout the novel, is the brother of Scout. He could be described as a typical American boy of the time, constantly trying to prove his bravery by refusing to back down on dares, and dreaming of football. Throughout the beginning of the novel, he is shown as Scouts constant playmate, but this gradually deteriorates as he reaches adolescence. Jem is four years older than Scout and as he separates himself from her games, he still remains a close companion and protector.
