The narrator and protagonist of the story, Jean Louise Finch, nicknamed Scout, is aged six to nine during the course of the story. Scout lives with her father, Atticus, her brother, Jem, and their black maid/cook, Calpurnia, in Maycomb - a small county in the Southern state of Alabama. Her father's intelligence is reflected upon her, she can read, and it is somewhat apparent that she will grow into a wise woman. During the beginning of the novel, Scout is shown as a combative tomboy, using her fists to solve her problems. This soon becomes a problem when members of the community insult her father after her took the case to defend a black man. Scout seems to show faith in the goodness of the members in Maycomb, and her father's morals influence her personality.
